In accordance with Milchan’s conceptual motivations, Cohen’s meditative, gently flowing music, offers a rewarding contrast to the urban cacophony, and attempts to infuse a dose of simple beauty into the city scene. Cohen explains, “when I was working on the music, I had to always remember that it would be played 24/7. I was careful to not create something too clear or catchy. I did not want people to be able to start humming it to themselves after a few minutes. You can look away from visual art, but to ignore the music, the actual sound, would be completely impossible. People in the building will literally hear the music no matter which direction they face, regardless of whether they want to hear it or not. So I chose a more meditative approach. While experimenting with it, I tried leaving it on for increasing periods of time. When I met with Elinor we kept the music going throughout our meetings. It never got in the way. It never seemed to be too much. In fact, it serves great as background music. If you don’t put your heart to it, it can remain just that. But once you give it your attention then you can submit to it and find a whole world within it, much like the visuals. The movement in the video is extremely slow, as well as in the music.” Avishai Cohen’s Seven is available for download now on iTunes, Amazon, and other music download providers.
Avishai Cohen was recently commissioned to compose music for Seven - A Visual Journey of Light as a Symbol of Time, conceived by visual artist Elinor Milchan. Seven is an innovative public, multi-screen video installation to debut in the Times Square Building (the former New York Times building) that celebrates light and the seven colors of the visible spectrum. The installation will go on view this Fall (2008) and will remain at the location permanently, with the videos running 24/7, 365 days a year, accompanied by Cohen’s soundtrack.
